The Real Meaning of Digital Transformation for Businesses Today
Limited Capacity seats available

Today’s market place is volatile. Anyone can be a threat and entrenched market leaders are forced to defend themselves against entirely unexpected challengers who are waging a war using technology. Enterprises must become technology companies to remain competitive, and getting there is far from easy.

But big enterprise can still win in this space. Digital transformation is the new way to stay relevant to win in the market. Today's generation of business transformation is coming from a digital space that has reinvention at its very core, requiring a deep commitment to actively use new ways to approach change.

This talk explores what reinvention means in this "new digital organization" including the reframing of roles, self, mindset, culture and resources. Most importantly it provides practical, achievable tips on how to progress without failing and to successfully lead change over time using small steps done everyday with great care.

Register at http://techweek.com/la/rsvp-techweek-la-2015-film-screening/!!!

Pivotal and Tech Week LA invite you to join us for a special screening of, CODE: Debugging the Gender Gap. CODE documentary takes a closer look at tech hubs around the world and why the total number of female and minority software engineers have dropped.  The documentary poses the questions: why is there a dearth of female and minority software engineers, what would society gain from having more women and people of color coding, and how do we get there? CODE goes beyond laying bare the tech world’s dirty secrets – an exercise of razor-like precision – to offer solutions, highlighting an array of breakthrough efforts that are producing a more diverse set of computer programmers.

The screening will be followed by a panel discussion features Katy Lynch, CEO of Tech Week, and senior leaders from the tech community. The panel will explore both the challenges that companies face today with diversity and how they can solve them.

Leading into the Future: The Lean Startup Mindset
The greatest risk to any company right at this moment is the pace of change: It's increasing daily, putting your plans in jeopardy even as we speak. Whether you're leading a startup or a big company, "delivering on plans" will not launch your product, grow your company, or keep you on top. Lean Startup is a new leadership mindset that transforms "change" from a risk into an asset you can leverage.

This talk will give you an early look at Eric Ries' new book, The Leader’s Guide. With Lean Startup we manage the risk of change by emphasizing learning over planning and fearlessly evaluating assumptions about our product, its market and the world around us. As part of this discussion we'll also look at the 9 key principles to implementing an innovation program at your organization.

Janice is Director of the Innovation Practice at Pivotal Labs. She is one of America's leading experts on Lean Startup, having advised many successful companies including Lyft and Sharethrough. She is an ongoing trainer for White House administration on innovation techniques. At Pivotal, Janice helps clients apply, amplify, and extend Lean Startup methodologies. Janice has coached, taught, and interviewed thousands of startup founders around the world. Previously, she was founder and CEO of Luxr, among the first Lean Startup firms, as well as Adaptive Path, the first User Experience firm.

Casual Climb Thursday hosted by Startup Climb LA

Hang out on a Thursday night with other Startup & Tech Rock Climbers. Spend a few hours climbing, then head over to the local bar for drink specials or anywhere else you decide to go.

Our weekly Thursday climbs are non-formal, come when you can, leave when you want events. You might even call them casual! For our weekly climbs, there's no set agenda or formal orientation. Organizers may or may not be present at our Thursday climb, so consider them as "no-host" events.

That said, if you're a first time climber and don't mind just diving in head first, come on out! There will sometimes, but not always, be an event host or two around to give tips and advice, and the climbing community is very friendly and helpful as well. Not to mention all the great fun you'll have. After conquering their first climb, it's not at all uncommon for new climbers to exclaim at the top of their lungs, "I'M KING OF THE WAAAAAAALL!" (see "Titanic")

However, if you're new and would like a little more orientation to climbing, join us for our Monthly events where we'll be focusing on orienting new members, climbing, socializing, and learning a thing or two from each other. Maybe even from an honored tech guest! Does anyone know Mark Zuckerberg? Or maybe someone who just looks like him? Heck, I'll even take his less know, made-up brother, Chad Zuckerberg.

We don't have a monthly climb scheduled at the moment but stay tuned!

GYM DETAILS

If you're not an LA Boulders member: Mention that you're a part of Startup Rock Climbing and you can get a Thursday day pass for a discounted rate of $15, which includes climbing shoes.

This is a special rate for our group and only valid during our events. In respect for our relationship with LA Boulders, please do not ask for this price outside our events!

If it's your first time in the gym, you'll be required to fill out a waiver. If you want to save a little time, you can fill it out online here: LA Boulder Waiver

If you're already an LA Boulders member: Just show up and climb!

If you're interested in an LA Boulders membership: LA Boulders has offered a special discount to our group on Membership and Day Passes. If you're interested in an LA Boulders Membership please send us a message!

Creating Solutions that Better Prepare for Future Risks
Delivering innovative solutions requires a change mindset and robust engagement with all levels of industry –  from the top-tier drivers of the market to the small business entrepreneurs and startup ventures. With IoT advances, everything in our world is getting “smart.” So what does this mean for our first responders –those who put their lives on the line every day? When severe weather is more frequent, fires burn hotter, and terrorism is increasing, IoT capabilities are fundamentally changing the security landscape by empowering first responders to access real-time data in emergency situations that can save a single person or an entire city. The challenge today is how to optimize IoT systems and devices responders need to be interoperable in a variety of operational settings - utilities, transportation, and infrastructure. What is the impact on citizens going forward? S&T wants to work with you to start answering these questions, to build trusted networks, promote standards, and facilitate the adoption of new technologies. Get connected to S&T and change the trajectory of IoT in your community!

The Next Silicon Beach? Orange County
Learn about the growth happening in Orange County, as highlighted by the LA Times' Andrew Khouri's recent publication.

"Through the third quarter of this year, venture capitalists pumped $722 million into Orange County companies, up from $448 million a year earlier. But that's less than the $1 billion Silicon Beach received and just a fraction of Silicon Valley's $23 billion, according to PricewaterhouseCoopers"

Getting the Experience Right: Why ‘Wow’ and ‘Beautiful’ Aren’t Enough
We all aspire to create experiences that users are wowed by, beautiful experiences. Sadly that isn't enough. Discovering and designing the right experience for the moment, the context, the need is remarkably difficult, and not just difficult to execute. It is remarkably difficult to simply envision the right experience. Let's uncover some ways to approach the problem by bringing together different voices from some folks who have been tackling this problem with success.

Where Design Meets Product Strategy
UX Designers are right about everything... right? But a successful product launch involves much more than a great user experience, and maintaining traction and product market fit involves dealing with a constant influx of opinions, data sources & constraints. Before you launch a product or feature, you design for what you expect; post launch, you design for reality.

This talk covers theory, techniques, and tactics for designing, launching and managing new features and products. It also includes guidelines for UX designers whose role is edging towards managing a product, and the necessary steps they can take for a successful transition.
